Don't tempt me.

Hmmm... maybe I could do a short Doom level as a contribution for the Con
game issue of Haymaker!?

From: Jason Sullivan <ravanos@NJCU.edu>
Subject: Ambitious "new" Project (was Archetype Clone Force, Attack!!!)

In order to show my immediate circle of friends the glory that is
the HERO system, I want to run an adventure for them.

My project will require the following:

-1) Construction of the world, which will be a John Woo/Quentin
Tarintino Horror world in the SplatterPunk Cinema genre. (Unsure of wether
it is "Heroic" or "Superheroic").

-2) Premade adventures, typical of the genre. Clostrophobic
paranoia being the prevalent theme. Dozens of "popcorn" mooks (like
zombies), and a few "boss" characters (mutants, demons, shogoths,
vampires, evil scientific corporations, etc.), limited ammunition,
conspiracy, and creepy settings, like abondoned mansions, warehouses,
abondoned towns, cemetaries, mine shafts, etc.

-3) Premade heroes of 100 base/100 disadvantage, 200 maxium point
total. Special character generation/motivation (for "bad asses").

-4) Overall House Rules set.

-5) "Starter packs," which would include preludes, a character
sketch, personality profile, tatics, and introduction to the HERO system.

I don't want to go through a long time character generation; to
save time, in order to do this effectively, I would like to utilize:

A) A "quick" character creation system (where certain elements are chosen,
such as profession, power sets [either as a whole package or individual
sub-sets <one from A, two from B>], life paths (creation, possible
enemies, etc.)
[There were post about this a while back.]

B) An "archetype" system, where certain archetypes (from broad types like
"Domestic Town's Person", to more distinct types like "Mafioso",
"Government Agent", "Outlaw", "Parapsychologist", "Virus Researcher",
"Vagabond") can be chosen.
[For which I need to look for characters to base
this off of within the parameters, or create my own, which would require
me to seek out and label the individual archetypes with a special
nomenclature.]

C) A "bank" system, where all of the characters are premade and selected
at random, by description, or by lottery.
[For which I would need to look for compleated characters to base
this off of, get permission from their creators to use, or come up with
the individual heroes to bank.]

Any help of any kind would be welcome... especially with the
Archetypes. I'll try and post compleated characters from said archetypes
for public use on the list or to a web site once they are finished.

Advice would be nice, too.

Books that would be handy specificly for HERO that I don't have:
UMA (for Martial Arts Packages and specialized rules), Almanac 1 and 2
(just because), An Eye for an Eye (due to the dark themes and specialized
rules).

Books from other systems that would be handy: Dark Conspiracy,
Call of Cthulu, Kult, Beyond the Supernatural, GURPS Cuthulu Punk, Horror,
Black Ops, and Area 51, Necroscope, Dom't Look Back, Chill, WhisperinG
Vault, Night Life, World of Darkness.

Packages, for profession, and special signature moves
(Gunslinger: Two Gun STyle, Run and Fire, Bounce off of Walls), Genre
conventions (Mad Scientists "secret rejuvination chemical", random
Telekinetic [ala Carrie], Occult Scholar with possible Sense the
Supernatural, Government Agent or Professional {insert evil creature
here] hunter with specialized training, the "Arsenel", townie with
incredible luck who manages to survive the whole picture) would be handy.

Zombies and other beasties are a must.

Cinematic inspirations include all Tarintino and Woo (for
character types), Vampire$, Evil Dead, the Necronomicon, Night of the
Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead.

Viedo Games, like House of the Dead, Resident Evil, Beast Busters,
and countless others would also be inspiration.

Viruses, pseudo science, super gunfighters and matial artists,
unspeakable horrors, countless minions of living dead, giant snakes,
strangeness, conspiracy...

...more to come.

GURPS Horror provided a list of potential Psycho-Killer weapons. I still
get giggly ove "garden weasel". If you've ever seen the ads, you know it
would _hurt_. And it would be unbelievably gory. But it would take a lot
of will to KILL somebody with one.

Minatures:
A while back, someone posted about using Poser 2 to create
"minatures" for game play. Lo and behold, Poser 3 came out, and a friend
of mine got it...
Here's the general scoop: customizing "alien" characters
is difficult, as is adding any sort of special attachments, additional
bumps, boots, cloaks, etc.
Over all, it's a wonderful tool.
You can paint directly on the figure's "skin map" with
dazzling results. Skin tight outfits, "drawn" designs from clip art,
tatoos, tribal scars... all this can be done. The Poser site even has new
special one week only downloads, in which they included a "super heroic"
set of poses.
Above and beyond this, animation is possible. Since the
figures are fully three dimensional, you can also have standard front/back
minatures, and tri fold minatures (60, 120, 180; common to Marvel Role
Playing Game).
Bryce 3-D can be used to add textures and backgrounds.
Check out some of my friends artwork done with Poser (pretty apprent which
is drawn and which is 3D) at:
http://www.mabelyn.com
in the Century Productions Gallery and in the Hara
section.

Also, shopping in the local Party Supply store, in the Party
Favors bin, they had a number of goodly scaled plastic animals. Mammals,
lizards, snakes, dinosaurs, and sea creatures (very, very cheap). There
were even slightly "larger" animals that could be used for "mutated"
specimins.

In a local toy chain, I found very cheap toys that could stand in
for minatures. The ever popular Army figures have store fronts and
bunkers, oil drums, and street accessories all in the approximate size, as
did one Star Wars play set. The Model Train section and Model Car section
also had a number of items that could be used for set dressing.

Of the larger action figures that could be used for "rampaging
monsters", any Jurrasic Park or Godzilla could work (my fantasy being to
get the 2 foot long Godzilla doll, re painting it, adding wings, and
during a Fantasy HERO game saying "The Great Wyrm Dragon rises from it's
lair...."). Spawn: Dark Ages sported a Dragon, as did DragonHeart.
Spawn also has an excellent source for Anime Lovers: Manga Spawn (all the
figures but OvertKill seemed to fit for the big battling robot genre...)
Die cast figures or Model Kits from Japan could probally serve the same
purpose. A three dollar set from Marvel's: Most Wanted included a team
called "Spit and Gravel." The dino of the team was good for a figure.
Resident Evil Overlord, Zombie, and Licker/Police Agent sets were going
for 3 bucks a set. Starship Troopers had some interesting bugs. Finally,
Virus's "Goliath" proved to be one of the grossest meldings of machine and
flesh I've ever seen.

On a side note, I'm trying to figure out a way to build "sets" for
hero out of things like Coffee Stirrers and Durham Putty. Keep you tuned
in.

Conseequently, would anyone know the minature "scale" ratio for
human to standard RPG minature?

Also, my mail (both of them) have been acting up lately. If
someone on this list could save me some of the incoming messages, I would
be greatly appreciative.

I used to know this. Now, most "25mm" figures are really 30mm tall (I have
some real 25mm and they're about HO scale). A standard American is 6 feet
tall (or darned close to it), so 30mm represents 6'. 6'=1.83 meters,
183cm, or 1830mm. Roughly 1/61 scale.

Go watch "Dusk till Dawn". Taritino and Robert Rodreguiez combine to make
an excellent "Splatterpunk" film. Woo doesn't make fulms like that, he
makes what are called "Heroic Bloodshed" movies about loyalty and honor
among the police and triads.

The simplest adventure possible would be to play "Hero goes Doom II". If
you have any old D&D modules lying around (or anything with an extended
'dungeon' complex) take that map and populate it with creatures, guns and
power ups. My websit has the demons from Doom written up for Hero (you
might want to tweak them a bit) and I posted yesterday's equipment list to
the site as well.

UMA has some useful rules for simulating wild martial arts. I have an
article entiled "Wuxia Hero" on my site that covers really wild martial
arts. I also post my submissions to Haymaker! to my site, including the
last issue's, which was "Fu Schticks for Champions" in which I adapted the
Fu powers from Feng Shui into Hero terms.

The Almanacs have some useful rules relating to poisons, while I4NI has
some nice alternate gunfighting rules.

CoC translates real well into Hero. The stats can be used almost
directly and corrolate to Hero stats fairly easily.

Doom, Quake and half-Life.

My website has (among others) a write-up for he cinematic verions of
Chow Yun-Fat, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. It also has Fong Sai Yuk (of HK
cinema fame) the cast of Big Trouble in Little China, and a numner of
horrors in the Silent Mobius world book. Help yourself.

Well, for many monsters you can translate the numbers over almost
directly. The Body (or Hit Points) get a bit high, but in general the
STR, CON and DEX scores work well. Sure, Cthuhlu ends up with a 120 STR,
but is that all that far off?

I will be attemtping to adapt a Flying Polyp sometime soon, I'll let you
know how it goes.

Mostly out of curiosity, what do you mean here by "60, 120, 180"?

I'll want to go take a look at this. I've likewise seen Poser 3 in the
stores, and have been fascinated by its possibilities (though also put off
by its limitations as far as building new forms, as well as its cost).

For 25mm, which is the usual scale, use a 72:1 scale.
If the less common 15mm is your preference, use 120:1 instead.

I think 60 degree view, 120 degree, 180 degree etc. SJG and Hero
Cardboard Heroes figs are flat front and back view. Marvel made some
3-sided figures that (IMO) didn't look all that great.

/_\ 60 degree angle, 120 degree angle, 180 degree angle. For Heroes,
diagonal profile, diagonal profile from the other side, and back, or
for Villians, front, diagonal profile from the back, and diagonal
profile from the other side of the back.
