The crystalline mineral quickly became worth twenty times its weight in gold. The kerium boom forever changed the fortunes of Amerindian human settlers and of the native rodent-like Prarie People on the remote colony of New Cheyenne. Overrun with miners, merchants, and technicians for its hastily built starport, New Cheyenne was incorporated into Galactic civilization as the territory of New Texas. The original human colony and its new starport were renamed Fort Kerium. The colony's prosperity also drew all manner of thieves, con men, smugglers, and claim jumpers. Starport authority security officers protected the base but were unable to curb the outbreak of lawlessness elsewhere on the planet, even in the nearby town. When the chaos threatened to disrupt mining operations, the Galactic Marshals Office sent one of its recent graduates, a man born and raised on the colony, to restore order. That man was BraveStarr. The new marshal won public confidence by making short work of the routine brigands plaguing Fort Kerium. He was brought up short, however, by a new menace. Ore smuggler Tex Hex had arisen like an evil phoenix from the burning wreckage of his overloaded blockade runner, invulnerable to mortal weapons and able to bend the worst of the remaining outlaws to his will. While trailing the gang across an uninhabited waste, BraveStarr was approached by a wraith-like figure out of the remote past, a tribal elder clothed in traditional garb who identified himself only as the Shaman. To defeat this fresh evil, he said, BraveStarr would need to call upon the abilities of his tribe's totemic animal protectors. Obeying the elder's instructions, BraveStarr stripped himself to the waist and participated in an ancient ritual. When it was complete, he discovered that he had gained power to fight evil that no amount of law enforcement training could have provided. Powers and Abilities: Although he doesn't yet realize it, BraveStarr is a pawn in a battle between Good and Evil far older than the New Texas colony. His true opponent is a manitou driven from Earth ages ago by tribal elders. To protect him against this sorcerous being, BraveStarr has been granted the powers of hawk, bear, wolf, and puma. He temporarily gains these abilities by calling upon the specific animal. Hawk gives him the ability to view distant events and people from the perspective of a high-flying bird of prey. Bear empowers him with strength enough to crush boulders in his hands. Wolf lets him hear the faintest, most remote sounds. Puma permits him to run almost as fast as a galloping horse. Agile and tough even before he encountered the Shaman, BraveStarr now has the reflexes of a great cat and can withstand blows that would kill another man (although he still isn't bullet- or laserproof). And he's a proficient policeman and charismatic public servant to boot. Disadvantages: Because he is a pawn, BraveStarr is monitored by both the forces of Good and Evil. Even when the Hex gang isn't actively trying to kill him, strange things are bound to happen. When they do, he has to fill out the mandatory reams of paperwork for the Galactic Marshals records office. He's done a good job of protecting the Prairie People from human incursions, but his decision to take on a native deputy was probably a mistake, whatever its public relations value. Fuzz is loyal and hard-working. He's also clumsy, naive, less than four feet tall, and simply no match for the human and meta-human criminals his boss routinely confronts. Height: cm (6' 5"), Weight: kg (225 lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Native American Appearance: Marshal BraveStarr is a handsome, well-muscled Native American man in his early to mid twenties. (His specific tribal heritage is never mentioned, although the colony's original name may give a clue.) His long black hair is pulled back into a braided ponytail. He wears a white ten-gallon cowboy hat. When on duty he also wears the blue, white and gold uniform of the Galactic Marshals, which looks like a cross between a B-Western cowboy costume and a suit of UNTIL armor. BraveStarr carries a regulation Neutra-laser pistol, but it is so bulky and awkward to use that he usually settles the bad guys with his fists. His boyish grin pops up easily enough, but he's as grim as Wyatt Earp when facing down a villain.
