His early training suddenly came in handy, however, when an old friend -- Burmese policeman Nayland Smith -- came banging at his door one midnight warning that England was endangered by a foreign terrorist organization known as the Si Fan. Dr. Petrie agreed to help Smith apprehend the group's leader, the enigmatic Dr. Fu Manchu, and became further committed to the mission after several encounters with Karameneh, Fu Manchu's lovely Egyptian spy. Smith and Petrie attempted to prevent the murders and/or kidnappings of prominent diplomats, scholars and scientists but were ultimately betrayed by Karameneh despite her obvious attraction to Petrie. Petrie learned that Fu Manchu held Karameneh's brother, Ali, in suspended animation. He earned her love and Fu Manchu's respect by finding a means to revive the boy. The quartet endured deathtraps, hypnosis, and torture before escaping. Karameneh was briefly recaptured and entranced by Fu Manchu but she eventually regained her freedom and her memory and married Petrie. Hoping to evade her former master, Petrie moved his medical practice to Cairo. He enjoyed quiet domesticity until the early 1930s, when Fu Manchu renewed his campaign against the West. Petrie and his wife discovered they had a new enemy: Fah Lo Suee, Fu Manchu's daughter, who resented her ex-slave's status as a fashionable society lady. They also had a new vulnerability, their daughter, Fleurette. Fu Manchu hypnotized the girl so that she didn't recognize her own parents but offered to restore her to normalcy if Petrie would deliver to him rare pharaceuticals necessary for the Chinese doctor's immortality serum. To get his daughter back, Petrie had to save the life of the man he hated most in the world. After Fleurette's marriage, Petrie participated less and less in Nayland Smith's adventures. He lacked Smith's boundless vigor (or perhaps his fanaticism) and wanted to spend more time with his extended family. Since Smith had no trouble recruiting energetic young assistants, Dr. Fu Manchu finally left Dr. Petrie and his relations alone. Dr. Petrie is a respectable Edwardian gentleman with a good sense of humor and (though he wouldn't admit it) nerves of steel. He's devoted to his wife and daughter, loyal to his friends, and courteous to the player-characters. Not merely a sidekick, he has gained Fu Manchu's admiration with his medical expertise and ability to solve problems while under pressure. Fu Manchu even sent congratulations and a gift to Fleurette's wedding. Petrie's medical knowledge is above average in good part because of his encounters with the Chinese doctor's arcane science. He's also probably the first and most helpful ally PC heroes will meet if they have a run-in with the Si Fan. Nayland Smith is too busy, too mobile, and too irritable to make a good liaison. Height: cm ( ' "), Weight: kg ( lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Caucasian Appearance: Dr. Petrie, chronicler of Nayland Smith's war against Dr. Fu Manchu, never describes himself. However, he must be relatively young and healthy to endure his many harrowing encounters with Fu Manchu's minions. And he is apparently reasonably handsome since Karameneh found him attractive enough to cause her to switch sides. ========= Hero System write-up by Kevin Scrivner
