He must have originally been an ordinary policeman in order to have a human niece, and despite the acquisition of a robot body he still attempts to lead a normal life when off duty. What we do know for certain is that Gadget is engaged in an endless war against MAD -- a villainous agency in the SPECTRE or THRUSH mold directed by the faceless mastermind Dr. Claw. Powers and Abilities: I created several versions of Inspector Gadget, including ones of up to 400 points, before two realizations helped me settle on this one. The first realization was that Gadget is essentially incompetent no matter how many points you build him on. The second was that while the Inspector appears to have innumerable gizmos, they pretty much all duplicate the same core set of abilities. For instance, his feet may exude skates, skis, springs, or miniature jet engines depending on the terrain, but the net effect is an increase in his overall inches of Running. Everything else is just special effects. A third realization was that while some abilities are clearly built into his robotic body, others appear to be installed in the rumpled gray hat and trenchcoat that are his uniform. That the clothing is removable was revealed by an episode showing Gadget's closet filled with identical gray coats, hats, and dress shirts. However, there has to be a reason he always wears them regardless of location, climate or weather. In addtion to being lightly armored, the Inspector's body contains lenses and microphones that give him enhanced sight and hearing. He is able to extend an apparently limitless number of telescoping mechanical limbs a distance of approximately three meters -- although he has difficulty controlling more than three or four of them at a time. Various other devices built into his trenchcoat give him Flight, Superleap, Running, and occasionally Swimming. Gadget is able to protect himself (and someone behind him) from projectiles by inflating his coat into a bulky round Force Globe; while inflated, he is effectively immobilized. Surprisingly, he has few offensive powers. His glove contains a cutting laser which I've never seen him use against a live opponent (he employs it to escape deathtraps). His primary weapon is a mechanical arm equipped with an oversized boxing glove; the extra tension in this limb enables him to punch an adversary up to six meters away. Gadget possesses the skills in the basic Police Package, except he has Federal Police Powers. His Gadgeteering skill reflects the need for a Skill Roll to control many of his robotic abilities. If he fails his roll, a device other than the one he intended activates with predictably disasterous results for himself (and sometimes for the bad guys as well). You will note that one skill he does not possess is Deduction. It's not that he can't uncover clues. It's just that his interpretation of them consistently leads him to suspect everyone but the actual culprit. Disadvantages: The Inspector's ability to jump to the wrong conclusion is legendary. Were it not for the efforts of his clever 11-year-old niece Penny, Gadget would probably have been decommissioned long ago. Despite her deductive talents, however, Penny is still a young girl attempting to thwart the schemes of the trained criminals that make up MAD, the organization that is Gadget's primary foe. Fortunately, Inspector Gadget's nemesis Dr. Claw hasn't yet figured out who his true adversary is. Height: cm (5' 4"), Weight: kg (? lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Caucasian Appearance: Inspector Gadget appears to be a slightly plump, clean-shaven man in his late thirties or early forties. What we can see of his hair is dark and wavy. He always wears his trademark gray hat and trenchcoat no matter what the occasion or the temperature outside. He also habitually wears a benign (vacant?) grin except when he is confronting a suspect. Since he's a robot, the Inspector's real age is hard to determine. Gadget's real weight is also uncertain. Since he's packed to the gills with electro- mechanical devices, we can assume he's much heavier than his size would indicate. This hasn't appeared to affect him while adventuring, but he's so accident-prone how could we be sure?
