History: Xander Harris grew up in Sunnydale California with his best friends Willow Rosenberg and Jesse McNally. Xander dated Willow up until the age of 5, when they broke up over a dispute over a doll. Although she still considered him a potential boyfriend after that, Xander only considered her a friend. Xander was just a normal sophomore attending classes in 1997 attending at Sunnydale High School. While visiting the library looking for a book he needed, he happened to listen in on a conversation between Mr. Giles, the librarian and a new girl in school named Buffy Summers. They were talking about a dead body found in a girls locker earlier that day, and how the boy was killed by a vampire. Mr. Giles talked about how it was Buffy's sacred duty to destroy vampires as the Slayer. That night at a local club he ran into Buffy, who was desperately looking for Willow. He jokingly asked if it was to protect her from vampires, not believing any of what he had overheard in the library. Buffy seemed serious that Willow was in trouble. He followed Buffy to a local cemetery where they found both Willow and Jesse being attacked by vampires. Although he got out with Willow, Jesse was taken by the fiends (Welcome To The Hellmouth 1.01). Buffy took him back to the library where Mr. Giles filled him in on the history of vampires and the Slayer. The next day he followed Buffy on her mission to get Jesse back, but discovered that Jesse was now a vampire. He and Buffy barely escape with their lives. Later that night he helped Buffy and Giles stop a massacre at the club meant to help release a trapped ancient vampire called the Master. During the fight, Xander killed the Jesse vampire (The Harvest 1.02). From that point on Xander and Willow started to hang out with Buffy regularly. When Buffy decided to try out for cheerleading, Xander went with her to tryouts to show support, as well as check out the cheerleaders. He even bought her a bracelet, which he said was for luck. During tryouts one of the cheerleaders burst into flame. After several more odd occurrences involving cheerleaders, Xander and friends came to the conclusion that a witch was cursing the cheerleading team. They had the theory that it was Willow's friend Amy trying to eliminate the competition. In time they discovered that Amy's mother Catherine, a former cheerleader, was trying to relive her youth by living through daughter's body. Xander and Willow bravely sought to distract Catherine while Buffy and Rupert and the real Amy undid the spells Catherine had cast. Catherine was caught in a reflected spell meant for Buffy and was never seen again (The Witch 1.03). Xander was then targeted by a She-Mantis demon pretending to be a hot substitute teacher for a romp in the sack and a snack afterward. Buffy, Willow and Rupert were able to track the demon down and kill her before Xander was hurt (Teacher's Pet 1.04). Rupert then learned of a prophecy of the coming of the Anointed One about the time Buffy came into the interest of hunky upper classman Owen Thurman. She dated him, much to Xander's dismay, but when Owen tagged along when she was fighting the supposed Anointed One, Andrew Vorba, Buffy decided to break up with Owen for his own safety. Although Buffy thought she killed the Anointed One, the vampire she slayed was not him, and the real Anointed One, Colin, joined the Master (Never Kill A Boy On The First Date 1.05). On a trip to the zoo he was possessed by the spirit of a hyena and became very animalistic, eating the school mascot, and attacking Buffy. He was freed of it's influence (The Pack 1.06). Strange things then started to happen at Sunnydale High, stranger then usual. A fellow student was suddenly attacked by a large numbers of spiders and another was attacked by a deformed man in the basement. Xander had his clothes suddenly disappear in class and Rupert lost the ability to read. Buffy, Xander, Willow and Rupert figured out that nightmares were coming true. They also learned a young boy named Billy at the local hospital was in a coma after being beaten. Buffy was visited by the dream self of the boy and they tried to help him to wake up. Buffy then suffered from the nightmare that she was defeated by the Master, buried alive and turned into a vampire herself. Despite this she was able to defeat the deformed man, who was the manifestation of the boy's fears and help Billy to wake up. Sunnydale returned to what passes for normal (Nightmares 1.10). When Buffy was drowned by the Master, he was able to revive her with C.P.R. (Prophecy Girl 1.12). During his Junior year of high school, he met what he thought was a pretty young foreign exchange student named Ampata, and they immediately fell for each other. Sadly she ended up being a living Incan mummy who drained the life out of the people she kissed in order to live. Ampata really did develop feelings for Xander, and unable to bring herself to kill him, died (Inca Mummy Girl 2.04). On Halloween in 1997, Xander was forced by the school principal to participate in a program to take kids trick-or-treating. He purchased a surplus set of military fatigues and a toy rifle and went as a soldier. The rifle ended up being part of a bunch of cursed items being sold as a prank by Ethan Rhane, and would make people turn into whatever they were dressed as for Halloween. When the chaos broke out on Halloween night, Xander became a real soldier, and couldn't remember who he was or why he was there. He ended up protecting his friends and helping chase off a number of monster children and vampires. As a side effect of being possessed by the soldier's spirit, Xander retained knowledge of military protocol, tactics, and weapons use after he returned to normal (Halloween 2.06). When trapped in Buffy's basement by an assassin with Cordelia Chase, a popular and snobby schoolmate, he started a secret relationship with her (What's My Line Part 2 2.10). Xander used his knowledge of the military to steal a rocket launcher from a local military base to use against the nearly unstoppable demon called the Judge (Innocence 2.13). Knowledge of Xander's involvement with Cordelia crushed Willow when she discovered them kissing in the library (Innocence 2.14). Xander and Cordelia experienced an on-again off-again relationship. Trouble started brewing when Xander helped Willow pick out a dress for the Homecoming dance, and they started a relationship behind the backs of Cordelia and Willow's boyfriend Daniel "Oz" Osborne (Homecoming 3.05). Willow and Xander's affair blew up in their faces when Oz and Cordelia walked in on them making out (Lovers Walk 3.08). Cordelia wouldn't have anything to do with him, Willow went back with Oz full time, and Buffy still thought of him as just a friend. He briefly dated a girl named Lysette Torchio when he acquired use of his uncle's car and then had a fling with the vampire Slayer Faith (The Zeppo 3.13). Xander then came to the attention of Anya Jenkins, a demon of vengeance who found herself trapped in the form of a teenage girl. Although Anya was a demon, she was experiencing human emotions, and seemed to have real feelings for Xander. Xander knows she was a demon once, but she's the only girl who seems interested in him (The Prom 3.20). Anya left when she learned of the Mayor's plans to become a true demon and eat all the students of Sunnydale at their graduation ceremony, and asked Xander to go with her. He refused to leave his friends, and they parted ways (Graduation Day Part 1 3.21). After graduating high school, Xander decided to take a cross country trip, which was cut short when his car broke down. He spent most of the summer working as a dish washer in a male strip club to pay for a new car. When he returned home he moved into his parents basement. He met up with his old high school friends Buffy, Willow and Oz and helped them defeat a gang of vampires that were preying on the students of U.C. Sunnydale (The Freshman 4.01). Anya returned to Sunnydale months later and attempted to rekindle their relationship, but still didn't quite understand how to go about it (The Harsh Light of Day 4.03). Anya and Xander got together for Halloween 1999. They attended a Halloween party at a U.C. Sunnydale fraternity house that was interrupted by the fear demon Gachnar (Fear, Itself 4.04). Anya was then invited with Xander to have Thanksgiving dinner at Rupert's home. Xander became strangely ill and she had to care for him. They learned Xander had been cursed by a vengeance spirit named Hus who Xander had accidentally released while working at a construction site, and was now suffering from a whole host of magically induced diseases. Anya aided Xander and his friends in defeating Hus and Xander returned to health (Pangs 4.08). When Rupert Giles became owner of a magic shop, Xander and Anya showed up for his first day of business. He ended up so swamped with customers, and Anya was so helpful in getting work done, that he offered her a job, which she accepted (No Place Like Home 5.05) When Rupert Giles left the U.S. briefly to consult with the Council of Watchers, he left Anya in change of his magic shop. Willow decided to use the shop to experiment on a spell to create sunlight, which would be useful against vampires. What she did do was accidentally released Olaf, who had unknowingly been trapped in a crystal by witches long ago. Olaf set off on a rampage in the city and although he fought Buffy and Spike in the Bronze, they were unable to contain him. Eventually Olaf returned to the magic shop to kill Anya and Willow. Xander showed up and tried to save them, but Olaf was much too strong for him. Olaf was impressed with Xander's determination and told him he would only kill one of the girls, Xander's choice. Xander refused to choose one life over another, even after Olaf broke his hand. Anya pleaded with Olaf to take her if he left Xander alone, but then Buffy showed up and was able to defeat Olaf (Triangle 5.11). While planning to confront the banished hell god Glorificus, Anya suggested they use the Dagon Sphere and the troll-hammer of Olaf in the fight, which ended up being very useful suggestions. Before the battle Xander asked Anya to marry him, and they became engaged. Although Glorigicus was defeated, Buffy died saving the world from a dimensional rift (The Gift 5.22). Several months later Xander aided Willow in casting a spell to bring back Buffy from the dead. This spell was interrupted by a band of demon bikers looking to set up shop in Sunnydale. Although they didn't think the spell worked, Buffy did return from the dead (Bargaining Part 1 6.01 & Bargaining Part 2 6.02). Xander fineally announced their engagment to their friends on Halloween of 2001. Powers: Xander has an enhanced swimming ability thanks to his exposure to genetic material meant to make him a better swimmer (Go Fish 2.20) and has access to military training thanks to his transformation into a soldier for a night (Halloween 2.06).
