Current group affiliation: Generation X. Past group affiliations: X-Terminators II. Major enemies: First appearance: X-Factor #2 Origin: X-Factor #3 Description: Artie is a young boy with pink skin, no hair and solid white eyes. He is 4'2'' tall and weighs 67 lbs. Explanation of the conversion: I had to base Artie's powers on observations of feats he has accomplished in early issued of X-Factor. Later issues of Generation X never made use of any power of his besides making psionic holograms. History: Dr. Carl Maddicks was the head geneticist for the Brand Corporation. Secretly, Dr. Maddicks was also employed by the subversive organisation known as the Secret Empire. While working at Brand, Dr. Henry McCoy, the Beast, had ingested a chemical which caused him to mutate into a fur-covered form. The Secret Empire had wanted Dr. Maddicks to steal this chemical, and as punishment for his failure to do so, they shot him and left him to die. Unknown to them he was found and taken to a hospital. He recovered and took a new job at Ryan Research, where his son Arthur joined him. When Artie turned eleven, his mutant powers first manifested, changing his features and rendering him mute. Carl Maddicks became determined to change his son back to normal, and so kidnapped Dr. McCoy in order to force the Beast to help him (X-Factor #2). By leaving his notes on Artie's condition with the Beast in his cell at Ryan and scanning his thoughts Dr. Maddicks was able to make a chemical which was supposed to reverse Artie's mutation. Dr. Maddicks decided to try out this chemical on the Beast first, but before he had the opportunity, X-Factor came to save their teammate. At the same time the security forces of Ryan were coming and Dr. Maddicks asked X-Factor to take Artie with them, as he feared for the boy's life because of his freakish look. He remained behind to act as a distraction, and was shot dead by the security forces (X-Factor #3). Artie was now in X-Factor's charge and being trained in his mutant powers by them. A short time later, one of his fellow training companions, Rusty Collins, was wounded by the Freedom Force, and taken into the Morlocks' tunnels by the young Morlock girl, Skids. Artie followed him to make sure that he was all right, leaving a message for X-Factor (X-Factor #8). Unfortunately, while Artie was in the tunnels the Marauders staged their attack on the Morlocks. He met Leech and Caliban, two of the Morlocks and the three decided to try to find X-Factor. In the end, this succeeded, and Artie and Leech became not only training companions, but also the best of friends. The two young friends were after a short time enrolled into the St. Simons school where they met Wiz Kid, a young student, who also happened to be a mutant (X-Terminators #1). Both Artie and Leech were kidnapped by demons during the course of what was known as Inferno, and were rescued by their former training partners, the New Mutants and the Wiz Kid. Together with the Wiz Kid, they decided to go back to school (X-Factor #40). Some time later, the Gene Nation kidnapped Artie and Leech, stating that they were out to kill all former Morlocks (Generation X #5). It is still unclear, however, why they decided to kidnap Artie. Generation X, whose co-leader, the White Queen, was out to enrol the two friends into Xavier's school for gifted youngsters, came to their rescue. Artie and Leech now began living at Xavier's mansion, spending a lot of time outdoors in their treehouse. They were joined there by Franklin Richards, the son of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman of Fantastic Four, after his parents had vanished during a fight with Onslaught. During Generation X's fight with Black Tom Cassidy, the Man-Thing, sensing Franklin's enormous powers, felt that it was necessary to save the young boy from the villain. He, along with Artie and Leech, were transported to another dimension (Generation X #25). Powers: Artie is a mutant with a variety of telepathic abilities. He can read the minds of those around him, project psionic holograms and stun opponents with his mind. Since he seems incapable of speech he generally communicates with his holograms.
