In a future Japan where robots of all description are as common as fast-food restaurants, a wealthy industrialist lost his son in an accident. The businessman attempted to replace his child with a robotic duplicate, then changed his mind and rejected his mechanical offspring. The distraught robot was taken in by kindly, scatter-brained Professor Ochanomizu (himself an internationally acclaimed inventor), who provided Astroboy with surrogate parents and a robot "sister," Uran. In return, Astroboy uses his robotic abilities (considerably souped-up by the Professor) to defend mankind against rogue robots, giant monsters, mad scientists, and alien invaders. Despite being rejected by his creator, Astroboy retains a child-like good naturedness, a mischevious sense of humor, and an eagerness to please his mentor, Professor Ochanomizu. Although he can be grim and determined when confronting powerful foes, Astroboy is a diplomat at heart and attempts to reason with his opponents before attacking them. He has occasionally persuaded an enemy to become a friend. When diplomacy fails, Astroboy attempts to defeat his opponent as expediently as possible, the better to protect human lives. While he routinely uses his lethal weaponry at full force against fellow robots, he has never killed a human being. Powers and Abilities: In addition to beefing up Tetsuawan-Atom's robotic strength and durability, Professor Ochanomizu equipped him with seven special powers. Astroboy can fly, even through water and the earth. His atomic power plant gives him "100,000 horse-power." He has "searchlight eyes" and "1000x hearing." He can speak 100 languages. He can emit laser beams from his index fingers with deadly accuracy. And he has twin machine-guns built into his buttocks and upper thighs for literal "tailgunner" action. Astroboy's robotic body doesn't require air, food, or rest. He can withstand the rigors of outer space and the ocean depths, and is immune to aging, biological poisons and diseases. Presumably, he could be vulnerable to computer viruses, something not yet conceived of when Astroboy was introduced in 1951. Disadvantages: Although they aren't specifically mentioned, Astroboy follows Isaac Asmimov's three laws of robotics: He obeys lawful instructions from humans, won't allow humans to be harmed even through his inaction, and protects himself as long as it doesn't interfere with the first two laws. As a robot, he is effectively a second-class citizen expected to serve mankind, although he doesn't seem to mind. His metal and plastic body is much denser and heavier than it looks and is vulnerable to electrical and magnetic attacks. He can't heal BODY damage but must be repaired in a robotics lab. He's frequently hunted by unscrupulous inventors who resent his interference or Professor Ochanomizu's success. The most persistent of these is Dr. Foola, a rival robotics expert whose schemes often backfire before Astroboy can defeat them. Appearance: Tetsuwan-Atom appears to be a green-eyed, 9-year-old Japanese boy clad in black briefs, silver belt, and red knee-high boots. His glossy black hair has a spiky cowlick on either side of his head. The edges of a rectangular access panel are barely visible on his chest. When he flies, his feet (or hands, or both) retract into his body to allow his limbs to emit jets of flame. ========== Hero-System write-up by Kevin Scrivner
