He's an "A" student as well as a natural athlete, equally capable of building a radio set from scratch or tackling an adult thug. His duties as spokesman for an international restaurant chain enable him to travel extensively and indulge his passion for extreme sports. His desire to always do the Right Thing, whatever it happens to be in the given circumstances, frequently thrusts him into adventure -- and into conflict with less principled adults. In the process of promoting events such as blood drives and the Special Olympics, Big Boy has also thwarted smugglers, exposed dishonest junior sporting league officials, rescued marooned cosmonauts, and clobbered gangsters attempting to extort money from small businesses. Dolly has been his best friend since kindergarten and accompanies him on many of his adventures. Their interactions range from platonic affection to sibling rivalry. Although Big Boy sometimes dismisses her as "just a girl," it is often Dolly who discovers the clue essential to wrapping up a mystery. Powers and Abilities: While his physical abilities are well within the norm for adult humans, Big Boy is much stronger and tougher than an average grade-schooler. His bulk effectively gives him a level of Density Increase and makes him resistant to (non-killing) physical damage. Big Boy's ability to maintain his grades while adventuring and the swiftness with which he picks up technical skills also indicates above-average intelligence. I can see Big Boy growing up to become a Doc Savage-variety low-powered Brick With Brains. For an adult Big Boy (Big Man?), keep his base characteristics within or near normal maximums but add a couple levels of Density Increase to enhance his strength. He would probably improve and broaden his martial arts, vehicle, and technology skills. He might also pick up the skill enhancer Traveler and some location knowledges. After years of ethical disagreements, he may have parted ways with the Corporation and be Hunted. At the very least, the Corporation would want to smear his reputation. It's hard to guess where his relationship with Dolly may have gone. Depending on the GM's preference, she could be still just a friend, an old flame, his wife, his ex-wife, or the Corporate assassin trying to bump him off. Disadvantages: Big Boy's squeaky cleanness is both a boon and curse to the Corporation. He's trusted by the public, but he applies the same standards of righteousness to his employers as he does to the crooks he's confronted. A near-scandal involving the actor who portrays Shoney Bear on television commercials was resolved in a tense meeting behind closed doors. Since then, Big Boy and Shoney Bear have disliked each other, and the Corporation keeps a close -- if covert -- eye on its star spokesman. Height: cm (4' 8"), Weight: kg (187 lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Caucasian Appearance: Despite his trademark girth, Big Boy is a cheery bundle of energy who loves outdoor individual sports. He's somewhere between the ages of 8 and 12, has wide blue eyes, and dark brown hair with a cowlick above his forehead. (He looked like an anime character before anime was cool.) He always wears a white short-sleeved shirt and red-checked overalls. Trivia: "The Adventures of Big Boy" has been written by Manfred Bernhard since its inception. Issue No. 2 was drawn by Sub-Mariner creator Bill Everett. In 1996, corporate marketing executives decreed that Big Boy slim down to make him fit in with the current fitness craze, although his corpulence has never prevented him from being exceptionally active. A larger-than-life-sized fiberglass statue of the classic chubby Big Boy can be purchased online for $5,000. A 12" plastic Big Boy bank costs $10. ====================== Hero System write-up by Kevin Scrivner
