He returned to the United States after combat duty in the Great War under circumstances that forced him to change his name. Later, he served time for a robbery he didn't commit in order to protect the brother of a woman he loved. Marsland had a shady past, but The Shadow knew the murder charge against him was a false one. In exchange for a promise of complete obedience, The Shadow arranged to have him released. Marsland returned to the seamy neighborhoods of New York as a supposed mob slayer, feared and respected by the criminal community, but actually an agent of The Shadow. His reputation enables Marsland to get into gangster hang-outs that even crime reporter Clyde Burke, another agent, can't gain access to. And when The Shadow assembles a team to bust up a crime boss's headquarters, Marsland is usually the leader. Chances are pretty good that the player characters really will meet Cliff Marsland in a dark alley. Unless they're posing as crooks, however, he'll be there to protect them. He's not the most personable of The Shadow's agents -- he can be rather intimidating -- but he's a good man to have on one's side in a fight. Powers and Abilities: Marsland picked up most of his unsavory skills -- brawling, bribery, forgery, gambling, interrogation -- trafficking in the black market in France during the war. Since returning to the States he has become a fan of horse racing, since so many of his gangdom contacts are involved in the gambling associated with the races. In combat, Marsland is an inelegant, vicious brawler. What he lacks in technique he makes up for in brute strength. Disadvantages: Marsland's role is a dangerous one. He must constantly guard against arousing the suspicions of the criminals he is spying on. At the same time, New York's police are still trying to figure out how he avoided the gas chamber. He's not being actively sought be either side of the law, but that would change quickly if he should ever slip up. Marsland is also the sort who would run two blocks with the PCs before admitting that the persuing gangsters' last shot had wounded him. Height: cm (6' 6"), Weight: kg (265 lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Caucasian Appearance: Marsland has the brutal, broken-nosed sort of face that makes babies cry and adult opponents want to cry. He's got the bulk and muscle to back up his fearsome reputation. He almost always has a cigarette clamped between his jaws.
