Seems the rogue planet was about to collide with the Earth. The trio crashed and were captured by soldiers of Ming the Merciless, a galactic dictator intent on enslaving the sentient races of Mongo -- and Earth, too, while he was on a roll. The evil emperor immediately fell in lust with nubile Arden, while his buxom daughter Aura had the hots for gorgeous Gordon. The pair's working at cross purposes enabled Flash and his associates to escape along with Prince Barin of Arborea, rightful ruler of Mongo. During a series of misadventures, the foursome encountered other oppressed races such as the winged Hawkmen and the feral Lionmen. Gordon proved a charismatic leader and clever tactician. He eventually forged a coalition capable of thwarting Ming's schemes for universal conquest. The Earthlings then headed home in a rocketship confiscated from the former overlord's fleet. Emperor Ming was not so easily defeated, however. He infested the coalition government with his spies, established a base on Mars, and loosed a genetically manufactured plague on Earth. Gordon, Zarkov, and Arden had to return to Mongo several times during the next two decades to counter his plots. Gordon eventually killed Ming by crashing a rocketship into his palace. The despot was impaled by the radio antenna on the nose cone of Flash's spacecraft. Flash Gordon is a classic action hero: loyal to his comrades, devoted to Dale Arden, implacable in his opposition to Ming's tyranny. He's capable of brilliant strategy but tends to strike first and think later. He's a gung-ho, black-and-white sort of fellow. He will heartily welcome the player-characters' assistance against Ming -- if they can persuade him they're on the level. Gordon has become less trusting after betrayals by Ming's sleeper agents. He has a knack for turning enemies into allies. The one thing he won't forgive the PCs is any romantic advance toward Dale. Powers and Abilities: Gordon is a skilled fighting man, a powerful orator, and a talented military commander. His most notable gift, however, is his ability to fly or drive almost any alien vehicle after a mere glance at its controls. He also seems to be about the luckiest man alive, surviving countless aircraft crashes and battles that should have left him a mangled corpse. One skill Gordon doesn't have is Computer Programing; despite all its advanced technology, Mongonese civilization never conceived an electronic information storage and retrieval system. When he pilots a rocketship, Flash plots its course and calculates all those vectors in his head. He also doesn't have Seduction. Gordon is mostly unaware of his effect on the opposite sex and can't understand why Dale is so jealous. Disadvantages: Flash Gordon's weaknesses are largely self-explanatory. He's noble to a fault, which makes him vulnerable to Ming's spies and to the lecherous queen of whatever region of Mongo he happens to be visiting at the moment. The reason Dale Arden rarely leaves his side -- besides their affection for one another -- is because she knows some scheming femme fatale will inevitably latch onto Flash. She even stows away aboard his rocketship when he's going into battle. Ming searches for Gordon fanatically, and Flash's reputation as the emperor's opponent draws both supporters and fifth-columnists like a magnet. Only his phenomenal Luck has kept his head from being displayed on the palace gates in Mingo. Height: cm (6' 3"), Weight: kg (250 lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Caucasian Appearance: Flash Gordon is the archetypal Strong-Jawed Hero: cleft chin, gleaming smile, wavy blond hair, manly physique, sex appeal that won't quit even when he wants it to. Because his hazardous activities as a freedom fighter are equally dangerous to his wardrobe, Gordon wears no set costume. He favors form-fitting military uniforms and typically carries a saber and a pair of ray guns. ========= Hero System write-up by Kevin Scrivner
