The Real Santo: Santo (The Saint or The Man in the Silver Mask) was a professional wrestler of the 1940s and '50s beloved by the Mexican public. Beginning in 1958, he was featured in a series of films of variable quality in which he portrayed a wrestler turned Interpol agent. His early movies coincided with the Batman and James Bond crazes in the United States, and Santo's screen persona combined elements of both. He continued starring in feature films until his death, by heart attack, in 1983. Background: Eldest son of an ancient Mexican family, Rodrigo de la Plata was destined from birth to don an heirloom silver mask to battle evil. Traveling the Americas as the professional wrestler Santo, de la Plata is actually an Interpol agent who wages a one-man war against malefactors – both natural and supernatural. Gangsters, mad scientists, and vampires alike have learned to fear The Man in the Silver Mask. Santo is Mexico's premiere superhero, occupying a position among crime-fighters similar to that held by Superman in the DC Universe and Spiderman in the Marvel Universe. It is almost obligatory that U.S. heroes traveling in Latin America encounter him. Because his career stretches from the 1940s to the present day and because he doesn't possess overwhelming powers, Santo can easily fit into a variety of campaign settings: pulp, horror, espionage, gang-busting, four-color superheroics. One difference for game masters to be aware of is that while U.S. superheroes often defy or sidestep the authorities, foreign heroes either work closely with or ARE the authorities. Santo possesses international police powers and tends to take care of villians himself rather than dropping them off at the nearest police station. U.S. heroes tend to think they're the only ones out there fighting the good fight. Santo is useful for reminding player characters that a world exists outside Campaign City, U.S.A. Why didn't the Nazis succeed in turning Mexico into an advance base? How was the League of Women Vampires prevented from subverting the continent? What stopped Dr. Death from launching missiles at major American cities (an event misunderstood in the north as the Cuban missile crisis)? Who saved Mexico City from the Aztec Mummy? Where can you find someone successfully waging the war on drugs? There can be but one answer: Santo! Powers and Abilities In addition to being a brawny athlete with a flamboyant wrestling style, Santo is a competent detective who has earned the respect of the Mexican police. He's no slouch when it comes to fisticuffs, but Santo uses his brain as often as his biceps to foil the schemes of evildoers. He can usually count on getting aid or information from one of his many fans during a case; his admirers also tend to get in the way at crucial moments. Although he has no obvious paranormal powers, the mask -- which was molded centuries ago from church sacramental vessels -- protects Santo against spiritual harm. He has grappled with werewolves and vampires without becoming infected with their respective curses and has shrugged off sorcerers' attempts to dominate his will. When he's off duty Santo lives the life of a celebrity bachelor, driving flashy sports cars and enjoying the company of attractive women (he'd enjoy their company more if his crusty old manager didn't keep following him around). He loves gadgets and, like Superman, has been known to give friends a signal watch with which to summon him in time of need. Also like Superman, he frequently employs doubles to stand in for him when he needs to be in more than one place at a time. Many a villain has gloated over the fact that he has captured or killed Santo only to have the genuine article show up to give him a good thrashing. In the event that Rodrigo really is slain, his closest male relative will take up the mask and become Santo. Disadvantages Rodrigo de la Plata has carefully separated his private life from the persona of Santo. The wrestler is never seen in public or private without his mask. Not even his manager has seen his face. The mask and his status as a sports celebrity prevent Santo from going anywhere incognito; when he's in the area the crooks, the press, and his fans generally know it. Beautiful women (and a tendancy to be unlucky in love) are a major downfall; he's been lured into traps by more than one pretty villainess, and his faithful manager occasionally has to bail him out of potentially scandalous situations. Height: cm (6' 9"), Weight: kg (300 lbs), Sex: Male, Race: Mestizo Appearance: Santo's headgear is a helmet-like affair of thin beaten silver shaped somewhat like a wrestling mask. It has brow ridges like Batman's cowl and a generous opening for the mouth. During wrestling matches he wears a silver-colored cloth mask. Other than the mask, he has no regular costume. The press has photographed a bare-chested Santo body-slamming thugs while clad in wrestling pants and a cape. However, outside the ring Santo is more likely to wear a tailored suit and fine Italian shoes. ========================= Hero System write-up by Kevin Scrivner
